Bran did play a role in Jon's ascent, however the amount of time spent on him in earlier seasons doesn't really merit that as his only contribution, or does it? Much of the story has a "make it up as we go along" feel to it. Having read all the books, the outcome makes sense, but still doesn't mean it's satisfying.
